However, in many scenarios, the time horizon is not fixed, but the stopping time is chosen according to some distribution such that the expected stopping time is T. If the stopping time distribution is not known, then to ensure robustness, the distribution is chosen by an adversary, to represent the worst-case scenario. A stationary plan for every vertex always chooses the same outgoing edge. For fixed horizon or fixed stopping-time distribution, stationary plans are not sufficient for optimality. Quite surprisingly we show that when an adversary chooses the stopping-time distribution with expected stopping time T, then stationary plans are sufficient. While computing optimal stationary plans for fixed horizon is NP-complete, we show that computing optimal stationary plans under adversarial stopping-time distribution can be achieved in polynomial time. Consequently, our polynomial-time algorithm for adversarial stopping time also computes an optimal plan among all possible plans.","lang":"eng"}],"isi":1,"quality_controlled":"1","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1802.03642"}],"external_id":{"arxiv":["1802.03642"],"isi":["000805002800001"]},"oa":1,"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"conference":{"end_date":"2019-06-27","start_date":"2019-06-24","location":"Vancouver, BC, Canada","name":"LICS: Symposium on Logic in Computer Science"},"doi":"10.1109/lics.2019.8785706","month":"06","publication_identifier":{"isbn":["9781728136080"]},"publication_status":"published","department":[{"_id":"KrCh"}],"publisher":"IEEE","year":"2019","date_updated":"2023-09-07T14:48:11Z","date_created":"2020-01-29T16:18:33Z","author":[{"last_name":"Chatterjee","first_name":"Krishnendu","orcid":"0000-0002-4561-241X","id":"2E5DCA20-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","full_name":"Chatterjee, Krishnendu"},{"first_name":"Laurent","last_name":"Doyen","full_name":"Doyen, Laurent"}],"related_material":{"record":[{"id":"11402","relation":"later_version","status":"public"}]}},{"oa_version":"Published Version","file":[{"date_created":"2020-02-11T09:25:23Z","date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:47:58Z","checksum":"26b9ba8f0155d183f1ee55295934a17f","file_id":"7483","relation":"main_file","creator":"dernst","file_size":5805248,"content_type":"application/pdf","file_name":"2019_Quantum_Vukics.pdf","access_level":"open_access"}],"user_id":"c635000d-4b10-11ee-a964-aac5a93f6ac1","_id":"7451","intvolume":" 3","status":"public","ddc":["530"],"title":"Finite-size scaling of the photon-blockade breakdown dissipative quantum phase transition","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"We prove that the observable telegraph signal accompanying the bistability in the photon-blockade-breakdown regime of the driven and lossy Jaynes–Cummings model is the finite-size precursor of what in the thermodynamic limit is a genuine first-order phase transition. In this work, we propose a new training procedure for multi-exit architectures based on the principle of knowledge distillation. The method encourage searly exits to mimic later, more accurate exits, by matching their output probabilities.\r\nExperiments on CIFAR100 and ImageNet show that distillation-based training significantly improves the accuracy of early exits while maintaining state-of-the-art accuracy for late ones. The method is particularly beneficial when training data is limited and it allows a straightforward extension to semi-supervised learning,i.e. making use of unlabeled data at training time. Moreover, it takes only afew lines to implement and incurs almost no computational overhead at training time, and none at all at test time.","lang":"eng"}],"type":"conference","file":[{"file_name":"main.pdf","access_level":"open_access","content_type":"application/pdf","file_size":735768,"creator":"bphuong","relation":"main_file","file_id":"7480","date_created":"2020-02-11T09:06:39Z","date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:47:59Z","checksum":"7b77fb5c2d27c4c37a7612ba46a66117"}],"oa_version":"Submitted Version","title":"Distillation-based training for multi-exit architectures","status":"public","ddc":["000"],"user_id":"c635000d-4b10-11ee-a964-aac5a93f6ac1","_id":"7479","article_processing_charge":"No","has_accepted_license":"1","day":"01","scopus_import":"1","date_published":"2019-10-01T00:00:00Z","page":"1355-1364","citation":{"ama":"Phuong M, Lampert C. The first line of social immune defense is sanitary care, which is performed by colony members to protect their pathogen-exposed nestmates from developing an infection. If sanitary care fails and an infection becomes established, a second line of social immune defense is deployed to stop disease transmission within the colony and to protect the valuable queens, which together with the males are the reproductive individuals of the colony. Insect colonies are separated into these reproductive individuals and the sterile worker force, forming a superorganismal reproductive unit reminiscent of the differentiated germline and soma in a multicellular organism. Ultimately, the social immune response preserves the germline of the superorganism insect colony and increases overall fitness of the colony in case of disease. The desired deformation of the panels derives from the proper selection of their elastic properties. Optimized panels, called FlexMaps, are designed such that, once they are bent and assembled, the resulting static equilibrium configuration matches a desired input 3D shape. The FlexMaps elastic properties are controlled by locally varying spiraling geometric mesostructures, which are optimized in size and shape to match the global curvature (i.e., bending requests) of the target shape. The design pipeline starts from a quad mesh representing the input 3D shape, which defines the edge size and the total amount of spirals: every quad will embed one spiral. Then, an optimization algorithm tunes the geometry of the spirals by using a simplified pre-computed rod model. This rod model is derived from a non-linear regression algorithm which approximates the non-linear behavior of solid FEM spiral models subject to hundreds of load combinations. This innovative pipeline has been applied to the project of a lightweight plywood pavilion named FlexMaps Pavilion, which is a single-layer piecewise twisted arc that fits a bounding box of 3.90x3.96x3.25 meters."}],"type":"conference","author":[{"full_name":"Laccone, Francesco","first_name":"Francesco","last_name":"Laccone"},{"last_name":"Malomo","first_name":"Luigi","full_name":"Malomo, Luigi"},{"id":"2DC83906-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Jesus","last_name":"Perez Rodriguez","full_name":"Perez Rodriguez, Jesus"},{"last_name":"Pietroni","first_name":"Nico","full_name":"Pietroni, Nico"},{"full_name":"Ponchio, Federico","first_name":"Federico","last_name":"Ponchio"},{"first_name":"Bernd","last_name":"Bickel","id":"49876194-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0001-6511-9385","full_name":"Bickel, Bernd"},{"full_name":"Cignoni, Paolo","last_name":"Cignoni","first_name":"Paolo"}],"oa_version":"None","date_updated":"2023-09-08T11:21:54Z","date_created":"2021-03-21T23:01:21Z","_id":"9261","user_id":"c635000d-4b10-11ee-a964-aac5a93f6ac1","year":"2019","publisher":"International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering","department":[{"_id":"BeBi"}],"publication_status":"published","title":"FlexMaps Pavilion: A twisted arc made of mesostructured flat flexible panels","status":"public","publication_identifier":{"isbn":["9788412110104"],"issn":["2518-6582"]},"article_processing_charge":"No","day":"10","month":"10","scopus_import":"1","date_published":"2019-10-10T00:00:00Z","conference":{"name":"IASS: International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures","start_date":"2019-10-07","location":"Barcelona, Spain","end_date":"2019-10-10"},"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"citation":{"chicago":"Laccone, Francesco, Luigi Malomo, Jesus Perez Rodriguez, Nico Pietroni, Federico Ponchio, Bernd Bickel, and Paolo Cignoni. “FlexMaps Pavilion: A Twisted Arc Made of Mesostructured Flat Flexible Panels.” In IASS Symposium 2019 - 60th Anniversary Symposium of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures; Structural Membranes 2019 - 9th International Conference on Textile Composites and Inflatable Structures, FORM and FORCE, 509–15.
